A mass funeral service is being held today in Molepolole Village, Botswana to lay to rest the 45 Botswana nationals who tragically lost their lives in a bus crash in Limpopo, South Africa on Easter weekend. The victims, members of Saint Engenas ZCC, were en route to a pilgrimage in Moria outside Polokwane when their bus plunged off a bridge and caught fire on March 28.

Why this matters: This tragic incident highlights the need for improved road safety measures and emergency response systems in both Botswana and South Africa. It also underscores the importance of regional cooperation in responding to cross-border disasters and providing support to affected families.

Miraculously, an 8-year-old girl was the sole survivor of thedevastating crash. She has since been reunited with her family in Botswana. The identities of the deceased passengers had to be confirmed through DNA testing due to the severity of the accident.

The mass funeral service at the Molepolole sports complex is being attended by a large number of mourners. Dr. Phophi Ramathuba, Limpopo's Health MEC, is representing South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the somber event.

Prior to the funeral, a memorial service was held on Tuesday morning at the Polokwane International Airport hall. Dr. Ramathuba, who led the repatriation process of the remains, spoke about the tireless efforts to identify the victims, saying,"The police's victim identification unit, the biology section of the forensic science laboratory unit, forensic pathology services and their Botswana counterparts worked tirelessly since the day of the accident to recover and positively identify the human remains through DNA processes. It has been a long, tiring and equally traumatising journey for the team, but we are comforted by the fact that the families will finally find closure."

The victims' remains were handed over to the Botswana government for repatriation following the memorial service. The repatriation process was led by Health and Social Development MECs Dr. Phophi Ramathuba and Nandi Ndalane, Capricorn Mayor Mamedupi Teffo, and provincial police commissioner Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe, among others.

The tragic bus crash in Limpopo has deeply affected both the Botswana and South African communities. As the 45 victims are laid to rest today, the sole survivor, an 8-year-old girl, serves as a symbol of hope amidst the immense grief.
