NTPC Green Energy and Indus Towers Partner to Develop Renewable Energy Projects Across India

NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL), a subsidiary of India's largest power utility NTPC, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indus Towers Ltd, India's leading provider of passive telecom infrastructure, to jointly develop renewable energy projects. The partnership aims to power Indus Towers' telecom infrastructure across the country with solar, wind, and energy storage solutions.

The collaboration aligns with Indus Towers' Net Zero commitments and NTPC's target of achieving 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032. Indus Towers plans to expand its renewable energy portfolio in a phased manner to a gigawatt-scale capacity for its business operations nationwide.

NTPC currently has 3.5 GW of installed renewable energy capacity and a pipeline of over 28 GW of renewable energy projects. The company's fully-owned subsidiary NGEL will take up renewable energy parks and projects, including green hydrogen and energy storage technologies.

Indus Towers owns and manages over 211,775 telecom towers and communication structures across India's 22 telecom circles, serving wireless telecommunication service providers. The MoU was signed by Soumya Kanti Chowdhuri, Chief General Manager of NGEL, and Vikas Poddar, Chief Financial Officer of Indus Towers Ltd, in the presence of other senior officials from both companies.

Why this matters: This partnership between two major players in their respective industries demonstrates the growing importance of renewable energy in powering critical infrastructure. It also highlights the efforts of companies to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to India's goal of achieving a carbon-neutral economy.

The joint development of grid-connected renewable energy projects aims to support the government's efforts towards a carbon-neutral economy. Indus Towers is also driving research and development in new energy sources through its Flagship CSR Program 'Pragati', which includes the establishment of R&D Laboratories for Green Hydrogen with Solar Integration and Battery Management System at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. These initiatives are expected to play a crucial role in advancing India's journey towards energy independence.
