Egypt's 'Decent Life' Initiative Boosts Governorates' Readiness for Health Insurance System

The Egyptian government's 'Decent Life' initiative is making significant progress in preparing governorates across the country to join the national health insurance system.

In Asyut Governorate, the first phase of the initiative is targeting 150 villages, benefiting 2.4 million people, with females representing 48% of the population.

The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development announced the Citizen Investment Plan for Asyut Governorate for the fiscal year 2023/2024, allocating public investments of EGP 11.6 billion to the governorate. This represents a substantial 45% increase compared to the previous fiscal year's plan.

Under the 'Decent Life' initiative, Asyut Governorate will see the construction of essential infrastructure and facilities, including residential buildings, social units, agricultural service complexes, ambulance points, health units, hospitals, schools, family development centers, drinking water stations, sewage projects, mobile network towers, youth centers, governmental service complexes, post offices, and police stations. The initiative also encompasses canal lining, road paving, and irrigation bridge construction.

The plan aims to implement 63 developmental projects in the housing services sector, focusing on drinking water and sewage services. Additionally, 275 projects are slated for the local development sector in Asyut Governorate.

Why this matters: The 'Decent Life' initiative's progress in Asyut Governorate exemplifies Egypt's commitment to improving healthcare access and infrastructure across the country. By preparing governorates to join the national health insurance system, the initiative takes a significant step towards achieving universal health coverage for all Egyptians.

In line with the 'Decent Life' initiative, the Egyptian Healthcare Authority (EHA) is set to open 10 new hospitals and the Fayrouz medical complex on June 30 as part of the first phase of the universal health insurance system in several governorates, including Port Said, Luxor, Ismailia, South Sinai, Aswan, and Suez.

The EHA is also collaborating with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to digitize its hospitals, units, and centers, with plans to launch a digital healthcare alliance during the 2024/2025 fiscal year.

Dr. Ahmed El-Sobky, head of the EHA, emphasized the authority's efforts to improve healthcare services, stating, "The EHA is working on the second version of digitizing its hospitals, units, and centers in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology." These initiatives demonstrate Egypt's commitment to modernizing and enhancing its healthcare infrastructure to better serve its citizens.
