Cargill Recalls Over 16,000 Pounds of Ground Beef Due to Possible E. Coli Contamination

Cargill Meat Solutions has recalled approximately 16,243 pounds of raw ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The affected products were produced on April 26-27, 2024, and were shipped to Walmart retail locations nationwide.

The recall was initiated after Cargill identified that previously isolated product had been inadvertently used in the production of the ground beef. The products subject to recall bear the USDA mark of inspection and the establishment number "EST. 86P" on the label.

The recalled products include various ground beef items sold under the "All Natural brand. While there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products, E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause severe illness.

Why this matters: E. coli infections can cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms and typically occur 3-4 days after consuming tainted food or water. Young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to severe complications from E. coli infections.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled products are urged not to consume them and to either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is concerned that some product may still be in consumers' refrigerators or freezers.

FSIS advises all consumers to safely prepare their raw meat products and only consume ground beef that has been cooked to a temperature of 160°F. "Persons who experience symptoms of E. coli infection should seek emergency medical care immediately," the agency stated in the recall notice.

Consumers with questions about the recall can contact Cargill Meat Solutions at 1-844-419-1574. Those with food safety questions can contact the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854) or live chat via Ask USDA from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday.
