Heavy Rainfall and Thunderstorms Predicted in Kashmir from April 27-29

Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir, India, are bracing for moderate to heavy rainfall from April 27 to April 29, 2024, with the major activity expected on April 29, according to Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological Centre. The forecast indicates that very heavy rainfall, along with gusty winds, thunder, lightning, and hailstorms, is expected over some parts of Kashmir on April 27 and 28.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange alerts for Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh on April 26-27, urging locals to 'be prepared' for the adverse weather forecast across northern and central regions. Authorities have warned of potential flooding, landslides, and disruptions to transportation and utilities due to the severe weather. "Residents are advised to monitor local media for updates, take precautions against insect-borne and waterborne diseases, and avoid driving through flooded areas," the IMD stated.

Farmers have been advised to complete spraying of orchards on Thursday or postpone it until April 29. A rise in water levels is also predicted, particularly on April 27, 28, and 29. The maximum temperature is expected to witness a fall in the next few days and improve from May 1, 2024.

Why this matters: The predicted heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in Kashmir have the potential to cause significant disruptions to daily life, agriculture, and infrastructure in the region. The authorities' warnings and advisories highlight the need for residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and minimize the impact of the severe weather conditions.

Despite the upcoming rainfall, Jammu and Kashmir has recorded normal precipitation from March 1 to April 24, 2024, except for Samba district, which has recorded a 22% deficient rainfall, and Shopian district in South Kashmir, which has recorded a large deficiency of rainfall. Srinagar has recorded 275.5 mm of rainfall against the normal of 187.5 mm during this period. The IMD will continue to issue new alerts or update existing advisories as the weather conditions evolve over the coming days.
