NDE Commences Training of 50 Unemployed Youths in Gombe State on Agricultural Value Chain

Abubakar Fikpo, DG of NDE

The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has initiated a training program for 50 unemployed youths in Gombe state, focusing on various aspects of the agricultural value chain. The training, organized under the Sustainable Agricultural Development Training Scheme by the Rural Employment Promotion department, aims to enhance food security and create employment opportunities in the agricultural sector.

Abubakar Fikpo, the Director General of NDE, explained that the training covers a wide range of topics, including production, storage, post-harvest handling, processing, preservation, packaging, marketing, and the use of modern agricultural technologies. The program is designed to sensitize, guide, and reorient unemployed youths towards skills acquisition and self-reliance, aligning with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.

Why this matters: The training program by NDE holds significant importance as it addresses the pressing issues of unemployment and food security in Nigeria. By equipping unemployed youths with essential skills in the agricultural value chain, the initiative contributes to the socio-economic development of the country and supports the government's efforts to create sustainable employment opportunities.

The training, which is being conducted simultaneously in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, will span three months, with two weeks dedicated to theoretical training and 10 weeks focused on practical field training. Upon successful completion of the program, participants may be eligible to receive facilities to establish their own agribusinesses and become 'agripreneurs'.

Fikpo emphasized the potential impact of the training, stating, "The training is part of the NDE's efforts to reorient unemployed youths towards skills acquisition and self-reliance, contributing to the country's socio-economic development." The NDE remains committed to empowering unemployed individuals and fostering the growth of the agricultural sector in Nigeria.
