Pakistan-Born Bangladeshi Man Arrested in India While Attempting to Enter Bangladesh

A 25-year-old man named Ayan Alam was arrested in South Tripura district, India, on Thursday evening while allegedly attempting to illegally enter Bangladesh. Alam claimed to be a 'Pakistan-born Bangladeshi national' who had traveled across India.

During interrogation, Alam confessed that his parents had shifted from Bangladesh to Pakistan 25 years ago, and he was born in Pakistan. He said the Pakistani authorities had taken action against his family due to the non-availability of valid documents, and his father returned to Bangladesh with him in 2011, while his mother and other family members stayed back in Pakistan.

Alam also admitted to illegally entering Indian territory via Bangladesh in 2014 and then moving to Kerala and Delhi, where he was engaged in collecting recyclable waste. He claimed he had recently attempted to cross into Pakistan from Kashmir but was unsuccessful. Alam was detained by the Delhi Police Special Branch on March 15 before being sent to Agartala, from where he allegedly contacted a tout to help him cross into Bangladesh.

Why this matters: This case highlights the complex cross-border movements and citizenship issues in the region. It also raises concerns about potential security risks and the need for effective border management and cooperation between countries to address illegal immigration and related challenges.

Authorities recovered Alam's mobile phone, Indian currency, and several Indian documents, including an Aadhaar card, upon his arrest. A case has been registered against him, and the police are investigating Alam's presence in the Indian territory and exploring possible links between him and illegal organizations or outfits. "We are investigating his presence in the Indian territory and exploring possible links between him and illegal organizations or outfits," a police official stated.
