Giriraj Singh Declares ₹10.16 Crore Assets in Re-Election Bid for Begusarai Lok Sabha Seat

Giriraj Singh, a senior BJP leader and Union Minister, has filed his nomination papers for re-election from the Begusarai Lok Sabha seat in Bihar as the NDA nominee. According to the affidavit filed by him, Singh owns movable and immovable assets worth ₹10.16 crore, while his wife owns assets worth ₹4.15 crore.

The Union Minister has declared ₹1.96 lakh cash in hand, two bank accounts, and gold jewellery worth ₹1.10 lakh. His wife has ₹1.46 lakh cash in hand, six bank accounts, gold jewellery worth ₹7 lakh, and silver jewellery worth ₹50,000. Singh's immovable assets also include some ancestral property, and his income for the year 2023-2024 is ₹16,61,990.

Giriraj Singh's bank account has ₹43.82 lakh, while his wife's account has ₹47,672. The couple also has investments in various companies and financial institutions worth over ₹3 lakh. Giriraj Singh's self-acquired assets are worth over ₹7.3 crore, while his wife's self-acquired assets are worth over ₹6.9 crore.

Singh is pitted against CPI candidate Awadhesh Rai, who is the Mahagathbandhan's nominee. In his statement, Singh expressed confidence in the NDA's victory, asserting that India is on its way to becoming a 'Vishwa Guru' under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Why this matters: The declaration of assets by political candidates is a critical aspect of ensuring transparency and accountability in the electoral process. It allows voters to make informed decisions based on the financial background and interests of the candidates.

Begusarai is one of the 40 parliamentary constituencies in Bihar, and in the 2019 elections, Giriraj Singh secured a comfortable victory, defeating CPI leader Kanhaiya Kumar. Bihar will witness polling for all 40 Lok Sabha seats across seven phases, with the NDA having won 39 out of 40 seats in the 2019 elections.
