Nigerian Air Force to Receive First 6 of 24 M-346 Fighter Jets from Italy by End of 2024

The Nigerian Air Force is set to receive the first 6 of 24 M-346 fighter aircraft from Italy's Leonardo by the end of 2024. This marks a significant step in the Nigerian Air Force's efforts to modernize its fleet and bolster its operational effectiveness.

Leonardo's Vice President, Claudio Sabatino, visited the Nigerian Air Force Headquarters and assured the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, of the company's commitment to the timely delivery of the aircraft. The 24 M-346 fighter jets will be delivered in four tranches of 6 each, with the first tranche expected before the end of 2024.

The deal also includes a 25-year maintenance agreement with Leonardo, which was welcomed by Air Marshal Abubakar. "The long-term maintenance support ensures the sustained operational readiness of the aircraft fleet," he said, recognizing the value it brings in ensuring the aircraft's operational effectiveness.

Why this matters: The acquisition of the M-346 fighter jets is part of the Nigerian Air Force's efforts to modernize its fleet and enhance its operational capabilities, including in areas such as close air support, air interdiction, and tactical reconnaissance. These advanced aircraft will be a valuable asset in Nigeria's fight against security threats such as Boko Haram militants and Islamic State in the northeast, as well as kidnapping and banditry across the country.

The M-346 is an advanced jet trainer aircraft that can also be used for light attack missions. It can integrate air-to-air and air-to-surface munitions and targeting pods. Leonardo has struck a deal to mount a 20mm gun pod on the jet. To date, Leonardo has sold a total of 126 M-346 trainers and M-346FA aircraft to customers including Italy, Israel, Poland, Singapore, and Qatar.

Both the Nigerian Air Force and Leonardo agreed on the importance of regular dialogue and collaboration to ensure the successful implementation of the project and the expeditious delivery of the aircraft fleet. Air Marshal Abubakar expressed optimism for the future of the partnership, stating, "We have overcome challenges to reach this point and look forward to the timely arrival of this critical capability for our Air Force."
