Plateau University Student Killed in Chikam Community Attack, Governor Appeals for Calm

A 200-level Computer Science student at Plateau State University was among three people killed in an attack by gunmen on the Chikam community in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State on Thursday night. The attack, which occurred around 9 pm, also left several residents injured and properties destroyed.

The killing of the student, identified as Dading James Jordan, has led to protests by students at the university. The university's management has declared a two-day mourning period and suspended ongoing examinations in response to the tragic incident. "The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shadrach Best, on behalf of the Council, Management, Staff, and Students of the University, condoles with the family of the deceased student and the entire University community," said Yakubu Ayuba, the university's registrar.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang has denounced the attack as a 'barbaric act' and appealed for calm, assuring citizens that the state government and security agencies are working to restore normalcy and apprehend the perpetrators. "I want to stress the need for collaboration between the University Management, students, community leaders within the University's host community, and the security agencies in Bokkos to ensure the safety of all," Mutfwang said in a statement.

The governor also commended the swift response of security agencies and urged them to remain steadfast in protecting law-abiding citizens. He condoled with the family of the deceased student and those affected by the incident, praying for the quick recovery of the injured.

Why this matters: The attack on the Chikam community and the killing of a university student highlight the ongoing security challenges in Plateau State and the need for increased efforts to protect citizens, particularly students. The incident also underscores the importance of collaboration between educational institutions, local communities, and security agencies in ensuring the safety of all.

In a separate attack on the same night, at least 12 people, including women and children, were brutally killed by gunmen in the Tilengpat Pushit community of Mangu Local Government Area. Houses and properties were also destroyed in the attack. Senator Diket Plang, representing Plateau Central, has condemned the attacks and called for an immediate investigation and collaborative efforts to restore peace and stability in the region.

As investigations into the attacks continue, Governor Mutfwang has reassured citizens of the government's commitment to apprehending the perpetrators and ensuring the safety of all residents. The Plateau State University has also announced a 10-day closure of the institution, from April 19 to May 2, 2024, to allow the security situation to improve and reduce the risk to the university community.
