Taiwan Boosts Communication Capabilities on South China Sea Island with New Satellite System

Taiwan's Ministry of Digital Affairs announced that a new satellite network system on Taiwan-controlled Taiping Island in the South China Sea has increased communication efficiency by 3.9 times. The system provides 25 Mbps bandwidth for improved voice calls, internet access, and video calls for the 200 coastguard personnel stationed on the island.

The new system, which uses Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellite terminal equipment, has greatly enhanced the network communication quality between Taiping Island and Taiwan's main island. Prior to this upgrade, communication on Taiping Island relied solely on a Geostationary Orbit (GEO) satellite with limited bandwidth.

Ocean Affairs Council (OAC) Minister Kuan Bi-ling stated that personnel on Taiping Island, including coastguard and military personnel, have greatly benefited from the communication update. The system was officially activated earlier this week after testing, and it is intended to better meet the communication and audiovisual needs of the personnel on the island.

Why this matters: The deployment of the new satellite system on Taiping Island underscores Taiwan's efforts to improve infrastructure and assert its presence in the disputed South China Sea. Enhanced communication capabilities will support the personnel stationed there and strengthen Taiwan's ability to monitor and respond to developments in the region.

Looking ahead, the OAC also plans to improve communications on Dongsha Island, the only other territory controlled by Taiwan in the South China Sea. The communication upgrades on Taiping Island and the planned enhancements for Dongsha Island demonstrate Taiwan's commitment to its South China Sea outposts amid ongoing territorial disputes in the area.
