Homeless Man Charged with Murder Outside Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Leandro Kaienga, a 28-year-old homeless man, has been charged with the murder of 46-year-old Okechukwu Iweha outside the Tottenham Hotspur stadium in north London on April 7, 2024. Kaienga has also been charged with possession of a knife.

The Metropolitan Police launched a murder investigation after officers were called to Worcester Avenue, at the junction with Northumberland Park near the stadium, in the early hours of April 7th. Iweha was found unresponsive at the scene with multiple stab wounds. Despite the efforts of emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident occurred just hours before a Premier League home game for Tottenham Hotspur.

Detectives arrested Kaienga on Monday, April 22nd. He was charged on Wednesday and is expected to appear at Willesden Magistrates' Court in London today.

Why this matters: The shocking murder of Iweha, a British-Nigerian resident of the local area, has raised concerns about safety and security in the vicinity of the major London sports venue. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges of homelessness and violent crime in the city.

Iweha's family is being supported by specialist officers during this difficult time. "Okechukwu was a beloved member of our community and a kind, generous soul," said a family spokesperson. "We are devastated by this senseless act of violence that has taken him from us far too soon." The Metropolitan Police has reassured residents that patrols will be increased in the area to provide an additional visible presence and to engage with the local community.
