Fifth Victim Recovered from Baltimore Key Bridge Collapse

The body of Miguel Angel Luna Gonzalez, 49, of Glen Burnie, Maryland, was recovered on May 1, 2024, from a red truck at the site of the Baltimore Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse. Gonzalez is the fifth victim found after the bridge collapsed in March when it was struck by a ship.

Unified Command salvage teams located one of the construction vehicles reported missing when the bridge collapsed and notified the Maryland Department of State Police. The Maryland Transportation Authority Police and the FBI then recovered Gonzalez's body from the truck.

Colonel Roland L. Butler, Jr., Superintendent of the Maryland Department of State Police, expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragedy. "We remain dedicated to the ongoing recovery operations," Butler stated.

The Key Bridge, which connects Hawkins Point and Dundalk, Maryland, collapsed after the Singaporean-flagged container vessel M/V Dali allided with it, bringing all maritime traffic in and out of the Port of Baltimore to a standstill. Eight road crew workers were present on the bridge at the time of the collapse. Two workers were rescued and five missing persons have now been recovered, leaving one still unaccounted for.

Recovery efforts have involved the Maryland Department of State Police, Maryland Transportation Authority Police, the FBI, the Maryland State Police Underwater Recovery Team, and the Crime Scene Unit.

Why this matters: The collapse of the Key Bridge has had significant impacts on the Port of Baltimore, with longshoremen and port workers seeking immediate assistance in the aftermath. The recovery of victims like Miguel Angel Luna Gonzalez provides some closure for families but the incident raises questions about bridge safety and maritime traffic management.

Colonel Butler reiterated the commitment of authorities to the ongoing recovery operations at the Key Bridge collapse site. The Maryland State Police will continue working with partner agencies to locate the final missing person and support the families of those lost in this devastating incident that has profoundly affected the Baltimore community and the operations of its vital port.
