EU Chamber President Urges Europe to Act Autonomously in China Relations

Jens Eskelund, President of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China (EUCCC), emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum in high-level exchanges between the European Union (EU) and China. In an interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN) on Monday, Eskelund highlighted the need for trust-building in EU-China relations, particularly ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's upcoming visits to France, Serbia, and Hungary.

"I think it's excellent that the President is going to Europe. We also just had the German Chancellor Scholz visiting here in China. I think it's very important that we keep up momentum with these high-level bilateral meetings," Eskelund stated. He added, "I think one of the fundamental issues that we have now in the relationship is that we need to build trust, because trust is what will allow us to also have some of the difficult conversations that Europe and China needs to have."

Why this matters: As the EU and China navigate complex trade and diplomatic relationships, Europe's ability to act autonomously will have significant implications for global economic and geopolitical balances. A more independent Europe could lead to a multipolar world order, with potential consequences for international relations and global governance.

companies, remain, deeply, committed, market, offi Eskelund noted that European companies remain deeply committed to the Chinese market, with many increasing their investments in China. However, he expressed concern about the challenges faced by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in entering the Chinese market. The EU Chamber of Commerce in China currently has 1,800 member companies.

Looking ahead, Eskelund believes that China's development of new quality productive forces will create opportunities for EU-China cooperation in industries such as higher value-added and sophisticated manufacturing. He urged Europe to view itself as an autonomous actor in its relations with China, without undue influence from the United States.

Educational exchanges also play a vital role in fostering understanding between Europe and China. Bouaoud Elies, a French student living and studying in China, called for more educational exchanges between France and China. Elies hopes to become a bridge between the two countries and explore trade opportunities. France has established 14 training centers in China, while China has set up 19 Confucius Institutes in France.

As President Xi Jinping prepares to visit Europe, the EU Chamber of Commerce in China underscores the importance of maintaining open dialogue and building trust between the EU and China. With 1,800 member companies, the EUCCC plays a crucial role in representing European business interests in China and promoting mutually beneficial cooperation.
