Mekanika Launches Ultra-Fast Electric Vehicle Charging Stations in Malta

Mekanika Ltd., the engineering arm of the Gasan Group, has launched ultra-fast charging stations for electric vehicles in Malta's Central Business District. This marks the first such charging station in the country and is part of the Group's commitment to supporting the local shift to cleaner vehicles.

The charging stations were developed in collaboration with leading mobility provider Bolt and electric vehicle manufacturer BYD, which has introduced its fully-electric BYD E6 model to the Maltese market through GasanZammit Motors. The E6 model is specifically designed for ride-hailing operators and offers a range of over 400km, BYD's class-leading battery technology, and substantial trunk capacity.

Mark Gasan, CEO of Gasan Group, explained that the Group felt obligated to support the local infrastructure with high-level technology that provides the fastest and safest charging option for electric vehicle owners. "The automotive market electrification wave is in full swing, with over 7,500 electric vehicles already on Maltese roads, and GasanZammit Motors is one of the protagonists of this change," Gasan said.

Why this matters: The introduction of ultra-fast charging infrastructure is seen as vital for the future of electric power systems. This collaboration between Mekanika, Bolt, and BYD aims to boost the share of electric vehicles on the Bolt platform and help build more sustainable cities in Malta.

Buyers of the BYD E6 will receive €1,000 worth of credit on the newly launched BYD ultra-fast charging stations and discounts on Bolt fees. Ning Zhang, CEO of V2Power, the digital energy solutions provider that co-designed the ultra-fast charging station, stated that ultra-fast charging represents the future distributed energy infrastructure.

Ryan Mahoney, Bolt's General Manager, said that this collaboration aligns with their mission to help build healthier, people-centric cities by reducing congestion and pollution. "Adding fully electric vehicles to our platform is vital for contributing to more sustainable cities, and this collaboration also demonstrates our commitment to drivers and fleets by making electric vehicles more affordable, accessible, and economical," Mahoney added.

The launch of Mekanika's ultra-fast charging stations in Malta's Central Business District marks a significant step towards supporting the country's transition to cleaner vehicles. With over 7,500 electric vehicles already on Maltese roads, the collaboration between Mekanika, Bolt, and BYD aims to further increase the adoption of electric vehicles and contribute to building more sustainable cities in Malta.
