Clemens Food Group Expands Pork Processing with Kunzler Acquisition

Clemens Food Group, a leading Pennsylvania-based pork producer, has acquired local peer Kunzler & Company, adding three processing facilities to its growing portfolio. The acquisition includes Kunzler's operations in Lancaster and Tyrone township, Pennsylvania, reinforcing Clemens' commitment to delivering exceptional pork products.

While financial details of the deal were not disclosed, Clemens has confirmed that it will continue to offer products under thewell-established Kunzler brand. The acquisition further solidifies Clemens' position as the fifth-largest pork processor in the United States, employing over 5,000 people across its expanded operations.

Why this matters: This acquisition highlights the ongoing consolidation in the meat processing industry, which can have significant implications for food safety, quality, and availability. As the industry continues to evolve, consumers and regulators will be watching closely to ensure that these changes benefit both the companies involved and the broader public.

Brad Clemens, President of Clemens Food Group, emphasized the shared values and reputation that drove the acquisition. "The decision to acquire Kunzler stems from both organizations' earned industry reputations, as both are viewed as trusted providers of high-quality products to the marketplace," he stated. "I'm honored Clemens Food Group emerged as their ideal steward as there are many similarities between our cultures and commitment to excellence."

Kunzler & Company, founded in 1901, has been a family-owned business for over 120 years. Chris Kunzler, the former president of Kunzler Company, expressed that the time was right for the company to pass the reins to a new owner. "It has been an honor and a privilege for the Kunzler family to have been invited to the table of our customers for over 120 years, but now is the right time to pass the company reins," he said. "We found a great steward to carry on the Kunzler family legacy and we look forward with joy and anticipation to what they will do to enhance and grow the brand and product offerings."

Clemens Food Group, a sixth-generation, family-owned company founded in 1895, is headquartered in Hatfield, Pennsylvania. The company owns several well-known pork meat brands, including Hatfield, Farm Promise, Premium Reserve, and Prima Porta. In July 2022, Clemens sold a factory to US-based turkey bacon producer Godshall's Quality Meats, demonstrating its strategic focus on core operations.

The acquisition of Kunzler & Company adds three processing facilities to Clemens Food Group's operations, enhancing its capacity to deliver high-quality pork products to customers across the United States. As Brad Clemens stated, "From this day on, we look forward to becoming one team and are excited about the future ahead." The deal marks a significant milestone for both companies, as they unite to continue their legacy of providing exceptional pork products to the marketplace.
