Makerere University Launches Digital Archiving Project for Academic Records

Makerere University in Uganda has launched the Digitalization of Academic Records and Processes (DARP) project to digitally archive and manage student records, examination results, and other documents since the university's inception in 1922. The three-year project, which began in 2020, aims to create a digital platform for certifying and verifying student academic records electronically, generating reports on student enrollment and graduation data, and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of academic records management.

The DARP project was initiated to address challenges faced with the traditional manual system, such as the 2020 fire that destroyed many university records, inadequate storage space, and lack of a streamlined records management system. "Makerere is now one of the most digitally managed universities in Africa, and the system aims to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of academic records and processes," stated the university's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe.

The digitization process is anticipated to streamline transcript issuance, providing alumni with a seamless avenue to submit necessary documentation and receive their transcripts in a timely manner.
