Robocore Girls Advance to VEX IQ Robotics World Championship

Robocore, a team of three girls from Good Shepherd Lutheran School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has advanced to the VEX IQ Robotics Competition world championship in Dallas, Texas, on May 1-3, 2023.

The team, consisting of eighth grader Lainey Hermanson and seventh graders Tatum Wright and Ava Costine, earned their spot in the prestigious global competition after winning the excellence award at the state championship in South Dakota in March.

At the world championship, Robocore will face hundreds of teams from more than 40 different countries. The team has been busy remodeling its robot for a challenge that involves picking up and moving blocks, knocking over larger blocks, and parking in a designated area. Teams are scored on various aspects, including their dynamic, interview, engineering skills, and engineering notebook.

This will be Hermanson's second year attending the tournament. The Robocore team is thankful for the opportunity to represent their state, school, and faith on the global stage. They also hope to motivate other girls to explore STEM fields and pursue their passions in robotics and engineering.

Why this matters: Robocore's achievement highlights the growing participation and success of girls in robotics competitions. Their advancement to the world championship acts as an inspiration for young girls interested in STEM and demonstrates the importance of providing equal opportunities and support for girls in these fields.

Robocore's journey to the VEX IQ Robotics Competition world championship showcases their dedication, skills, and teamwork. "We are so excited to have this opportunity to represent our state, our school, and our faith," said Hermanson. The team looks forward to the challenges and learning experiences that await them in Dallas as they compete against top robotics teams from around the world.
