Alba Achieves First Ignition of Gas Turbine in Power Station 5 Block 4 Project

Aluminium Bahrain (Alba), one of the world's largest aluminium smelters, announced the successful first ignition of its latest gas turbine in the Block 4 Power Station 5 (PS 5) project on April 23, 2024. The milestone signifies a considerable advancement towards the project's on-schedule completion in the fourth quarter of 2024, just six months after the gas turbine unit's delivery to the site in October 2023.

The celebratory ceremony was attended by high-level officials from Alba, including the Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer, Chief Power Officer, and the Executive Management Team, as well as representatives from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and SEPCOIII. The First Fire achievement demonstrates Alba's commitment to integrating energy operational efficiency with environmental standards to align with Bahrain's Net Zero Emissions target by 2060.

The new 680.9-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle power plant will expand the existing PS5 facility and increase its total capacity to 2,481 MW, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 0.5 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of aluminium produced. The project is being executed by a consortium of Mitsubishi Power and SEPCOIII.

Why this matters: The successful ignition of the gas turbine in Alba's Power Station 5 Block 4 Project demonstrates the company's commitment to sustainable and efficient power generation. This milestone aligns with global initiatives for environmental responsibility and supports Bahrain's goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2060.

The success of the First Fire was attributed to the collaborative efforts of teams from Alba, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), SEPCOIII, and ESBI. "We are pleased to witness this milestone within Power Station 5 Block 4," stated Alba's Chief Executive Officer. "The First Fire of the Mitsubishi Power M701JAC Gas Turbine in PS5 Block 4 brings us one step closer to integrating ESG considerations into our operations, as we embrace Bahrain's objectives to reach net zero emissions by 2060."
