LESCO Detects Over 73,000 Electricity Theft Cases in 5 Districts During 215-Day Campaign

The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has identified a total of 73,488 electricity theft connections in its circles of five districts during a 215-day grand anti-power theft campaign in 2024. The operations, conducted on the directives of the Federal Power Division, covered the districts of Lahore, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Kasur, and Okara.

LESCO CEO Engineer Shahid Haider, who is supervising the campaign, reported that the company has registered 70,221 FIRs against the electricity thieves and arrested 29,954 accused persons. A total of 89,195,501 detection units worth Rs 3.34 billion have been charged to the power pilferers.

The anti-power theft campaign, which will continue until the complete end of electricity theft, has also targeted large commercial consumers found involved in electricity theft. LESCO has disconnected their connections and charged them with detection units.

Why this matters: The extensive anti-power theft campaign by LESCO highlights the severity of electricity theft in Pakistan and its impact on the country's power sector. The recovery of billions of rupees in stolen electricity underscores the financial losses incurred by power companies due to widespread power pilferage.

In addition to the anti-power theft operations, LESCO has also taken action against its own officers and employees who were found facilitating the power pilferers. On the 203rd day of its recovery campaign, the company recovered over Rs 2.10 million from 55 chronic defaulters in the five districts.

LESCO's grand anti-power theft campaign, spanning over 215 days, has resulted in the detection of 73,488 electricity theft cases in Lahore, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Kasur, and Okara. The company has registered FIRs, arrested accused persons, and charged a substantial amount for the stolen electricity units.
