Nepal and Qatar Sign 6 MOUs, Elephant Gift Agreement Postponed

Nepal and Qatar signed six Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) during the two-day state visit of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, to Nepal. The agreements cover cooperation in areas such as communications, sports, science and technology, industry, and commerce. However, the anticipated agreement to gift two elephants from Nepal's Elephant Breeding Centre in Chitwan to Qatar was not signed during the visit.

The Emir's visit, which concluded on April 24, 2024, marked the first highest-level visit from the Middle East to Nepal since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1977. Nepal's President Ram Chandra Paudel, Vice President, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, and other high-level officials were present at the Tribhuvan International Airport to bid farewell to the Qatari Emir.

Prime Minister Dahal affirmed that the Emir's visit is a testament to the strong and friendly relations between Nepal and Qatar. He expressed his belief that the visit will raise bilateral relations to new heights and lead to the signing of several agreements. Dahal emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation in areas such as health, education, infrastructure development, and economic empowerment. He also praised Qatar's development and expressed Nepal's desire to learn from Qatar's experience, particularly in achieving better development indicators.

The six MOUs signed during the visit cover cooperation in culture and arts, education, higher education, scientific research, youth and sports, and diplomatic training and education. Additionally, the governments of Qatar and Nepal signed an MOU for collaboration between their public prosecution offices. The two countries also renewed an MOU between their respective chambers of commerce and industry. However, a labor pact was notably absent from the agreements signed during the Emir's visit.

Why this matters: The signing of multiple MOUs between Nepal and Qatar signifies a strengthening of bilateral ties and opens up new avenues for cooperation in various sectors. The visit by the Emir of Qatar, the first of its kind from the Middle East in over four decades, underscores the growing importance of Nepal-Qatar relations.

The government of Nepal declared a public holiday across the country on the occasion of the Emir's visit. The agreements reached during the visit are expected to boost bilateral cooperation between Nepal and Qatar in fields such as media, business, culture, education, and sports. The signing of these agreements, along with the high-level discussions held between the two countries' leaders, sets the stage for further strengthening of Nepal-Qatar relations in the future.
