Ncuti Gatwa Debuts as Fifteenth Doctor in New Doctor Who Season

Ncuti Gatwa, the first Black and openly queer actor to play the iconic role of the Doctor, makes his highly anticipated debut as the Fifteenth Doctor in the new season of Doctor Who. The season premiere, set to air on May 11, 2024, on Disney, will feature two episodes: "Space Babies" and "The Devil's Chord."

Showrunner Russell T Davies, who resurrected the franchise in 2005, has returned to helm the new season, which marks a significant shift in the show's tone. Davies has described Gatwa's Doctor as "a Doctor utterly faithful to the 60 years that came before," while also promising a completely new take on the character.

The new season embraces a more joyful and family-friendly approach, with a greater emphasis on the Doctor's sense of personal and global legacy. Gatwa's Doctor is described as a guy who wears bright clothing, has an excitable manner, and a dazzling smile, full of enthusiasm and emotion. "He's coming in hot, he's a little bit cocky... my Doctor," Gatwa said of his portrayal.

The season premiere will introduce the new Doctor to a vast audience via Disney, with the first episode, "Space Babies," serving as an origin story. The second episode features the Beatles and a pivotal performance by RuPaul's Drag Race Season 5 winner Jinkx Monsoon as thepowerful Maestro.

Filming for season 14 began in December 2022 and wrapped in July 2023. The season will include a regency romp with Jonathan Groff and Indira Varma, which Gatwa and his co-star Millie Gibson, who plays new companion Ruby Sunday, have declared their favorite episode. Other episode titles and writers have been revealed, including Steven Moffat's new episode "Boom".

The new season of Doctor Who marks a significant milestone for the long-running series, with Ncuti Gatwa becoming the first Black actor and the first person not born in the UK to take on the role of the Time Lord. Gatwa's casting, along with the show's partnership with Disney, has generated excitement among fans eager to see a fresh take on the beloved character. As the Fifteenth Doctor prepares to embark on new adventures through space and time, viewers can expect a season filled with joy, emotion, and a celebration of the show's rich 60-yearhistory.
