Slipknot Welcomes Eloy Casagrande as New Drummer

Slipknot, the iconic masked metal band, has officially introduced their new drummer, Eloy Casagrande, formerly of Brazilian metal band Sepultura. Casagrande's arrival behind the Slipknot drum kit became official on April 30, 2024, just days after the band's festival debut at the Sick New World festival in Las Vegas on April 27.

Casagrande, 33, was recruited after sending in videos and impressing guitarist Mick Thomson with his humility and passion. Guitarist Jim Root reflected on the shows, saying, "We just did two new shows to sort of introduce our new drummer to the world... And man, that was awesome." The secret show at Pappy Harriet's in Pioneertown, California on April 25 was a special experience, with the band raising money for no-kill shelters and generating revenue for the local economy.

The audition process for Casagrande was grueling, as he explained in a recent interview. He received a non-disclosure agreement before the audition began and was given a list of 32 songs to learn. Casagrande spent four days preparing before traveling to the United States, where he was given a new setlist on the first day. "I think that was also part of the audition. They threw new ideas at me to see what my songwriting was like. They wanted to test me in every way," Casagrande said.

Casagrande's decision to leave Sepultura, where he had been the drummer for 12 years, was not an easy one. However, with Sepultura announcing their farewell tour, Casagrande didn't want to stop playing drums at 33. "I had a chat with Slipknot, asked about their schedule and if it would be possible to juggle the two bands, but they said no, it wouldn't be possible, I'd be exclusive. So it was my decision to leave Sepultura," he explained.

Wearing a mask and makeup while playing live has been a new challenge for Casagrande. He worked with Shawn Crahan to design his new mask, which has become a part of his persona. Casagrande finds that wearing the mask has a mental impact, making him feel like a different person. Physically, the mask can get hot and sweaty, but he has found ways to adapt, including rehearsing with a mask that simulates altitude.

Slipknot is set to work on new music after completing their 2024 tour. Although the band has not yet started writing, Casagrande has sent Root drum loops, which he has been working with to create riffs. Root praised Casagrande's humility and passion, saying, "You could tell he just lives and breathes his craft to the point where I see his passion and it ignites my passion for my instrument." The addition of Casagrande has brought a new energy to the band, with Root stating, "We're lucky to have him... We kind of feel like we've won the World Cup."

Casagrande officially joined Slipknot on February 5 or 6, 2023, after gaining approval from all nine band members. For their debut shows with Casagrande, Slipknot adopted a classic look, bringing back the 1999 red jumpsuits and elements of their early masks into their modern versions as they celebrate their 25th anniversary. Fans can look forward to seeing more of Casagrande and Slipknot as they embark on a prolific tour schedule in 2024, with dates in North and South America and Europe.
