Webster identifies "light, air, moisture, and heat" as the primary enemies of spices, which can cause their aroma and flavor to fade away quickly. He recommends storing spices in airtight and opaque containers to maintain their quality. "If spices are left exposed to any of these, their aroma and flavor can fade away in a disappointingly short span of time,"Webster explains.

While most spices have a shelf life of two to three years, proper storage can extend their shelf life beyond five years. Webster suggests using pouches instead of glass or clear plastic containers to protect spices from oxidation and keep them dry and fresh. He also advises against storing spices too close to the oven or pouring them over hot pans, as the oils that give spices their flavor start to evaporate at 37°C.

Home cooks should regularly check their spices for signs of spoilage, such as a musty smell, loss of scent, or color change. If any of these signs are present, it's time to replace the spice. By following these storage tips, individuals can ensure their spices remain fresh and flavorful, saving them money in the long run.

Experts recommend storing coffee beans in a cool, dry place, using a non-transparent airtight container. Ground coffee can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one month in a similar container to maintain its freshness.
