Tokyo's Haneda Airport has been named the world's cleanest airport in the latest World Airport Awards by Skytrax. The prestigious ranking, based on customer satisfaction surveys across more than 570 airports globally, highlights the exceptional cleanliness standards maintained by Haneda and other top-performing airports.

Why this matters: The cleanliness of airports has a direct impact on passenger confidence and overall travel experiences, making it a crucial factor in the recovery of the global travel industry. As airports continue to implement and maintain high standards of hygiene, it will be essential in shaping the future of air travel and ensuring the safety of passengers.

In the 2024 awards, four Japanese airports secured positions in the top seven, with Tokyo Narita Airport ranking fifth. South Korea's Seoul Incheon Airport and Singapore's Changi Airport also made the top seven, emphasizing the strong performance of Asian airports in the international, best cleanliness category.

The World Airport Awards, now in its 25th year, is a flagship event recognizing excellence in airport services and facilities. The awards are based on the World Airport Survey, which evaluates customer satisfaction across various key performance indicators, including cleanliness, comfort, efficiency, and overall experience.

Skytrax emphasized the heightened importance of airport cleanliness in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, stating, "Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the standards of airport cleanliness have become much more important to customers. Airports maintaining these highest standards are well featured in the best airport cleanliness results."

In addition to its top ranking for cleanliness, Haneda Airport also secured awards for World's Best Domestic Airport and World's Best Airport PRM Accessible Facilities. Tokyo Narita Airport was recognized for its exceptional customer service, earning the titles of World's Best Airport Staff and Best Airport Staff in Asia.

The World Airport Awards also crowned Doha's Hamad International Airport as the World's Best Airport 2024, with Singapore's Changi Airport taking second place. Seoul Incheon Airport moved up to third place and was named the World's Most Family-Friendly Airport.

The strong performance of Japanese airports in the cleanliness rankings underscores the country's commitment to maintaining the highest standards of hygiene and customer satisfaction. As global travel continues to recover in the post-pandemic era, the cleanliness and safety measures implemented by airports will remain crucial factors in shaping passenger confidence and overall travel experiences.
