AAP MP Alleges Delhi Jail Officials Cancelled Meeting Between Party Leaders and Kejriwal

AAP MP Sanjay Singh has claimed that Delhi jail officials cancelled a scheduled meeting between AAP leaders Atishi and Arvind Kejriwal on April 25, 2024. According to Singh, Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj had a 30-minute meeting with Kejriwal in Tihar Jail, where Kejriwal said people should not worry about him and that he is strong and will continue his fight.

However, Singh alleged that Atishi's meeting with Kejriwal was cancelled at the last moment, and AAP national general secretary Sandeep Pathak's meeting was also cancelled. Singh questioned the reasons behind the move and feared that Kejriwal might not even be allowed to meet his wife in the future.

Why this matters: The cancellation of meetings between Kejriwal and AAP leaders raises concerns about the treatment of the Delhi Chief Minister while in custody. It also highlights the ongoing political tensions between the AAP and the central government.

Singh said that even the British rule did not see this kind of behavior and that Kejriwal is being treated worse than terrorists or hardcore criminals, who are allowed to meet their lawyers and families. He said he will write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena regarding this issue.

Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 in a money laundering case, but the AAP has said he will continue to run the government from jail. Earlier, AAP leader Bhardwaj had a 30-minute meeting with Kejriwal at 'Mulaqaat Jangala', a part divided by an iron mesh where prisoners can meet their family members.

A senior prison official denied the allegations, saying that Atishi has been given time to meet Kejriwal on April 29. Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot's name will also be added to the list of visitors, and he will meet Kejriwal soon. AAP's national general secretary Sandeep Pathak had earlier said that two Delhi Ministers will meet the CM every week as he runs the Delhi government from jail.

Singh, however, maintained that the cancellation of meetings was part of a "big conspiracy" under which the CM might also be prevented from meeting his family. He said, "Even the British rule did not see such behavior. Kejriwal is being treated worse than terrorists or hardened criminals, as they are not allowed to meet their lawyers and families personally."
