Biju Janata Dal Announces 7th List of Candidates for 2024 Odisha Assembly Elections

The Biju Janata Dal (BJD), the ruling party in Odisha, has released its seventh list of candidates for the upcoming 2024 Odisha Assembly elections. Chief Minister and BJD President Naveen Patnaik announced the names of six more candidates through a video message on Monday, April 22, 2024.

The party has re-nominated Minister Tusharkanti Behera from the Kakatpur assembly segment and fielded sitting Dhenkanal MP Mahesh Sahoo from the Hindol assembly seat. Ranjita Marndi, the wife of sitting MLA Sudam Marndi, has been nominated from the Bangiriposi assembly constituency, while Sudam Marndi has been fielded as the party's candidate from the Mayurbhanj Lok Sabha constituency.

The BJD has also fielded Archana Rekha Behera, wife of senior BJD leader and sitting MLA Subrat Tarai, from Raghunathpali under the Sundargarh Lok Sabha constituency. Additionally, Sharada Prasanna Jena and ex-BJP leader Biswa Ranjan Mallick have been nominated from the Balikuda-Erasama and Bari assembly seats, respectively.

With this latest list, the BJD has now announced candidates for 141 out of the 147 assembly constituencies in the state. The party has denied tickets to five sitting MLAs, including Simarani Nayak of Hindol, Raghunandan Das of Balikuda-Ersama, Subrat Tarai of Raghunathpalli, Sunanda Das of Bari, and Sudam Marndi of Bangiriposi.

Why this matters: The candidate selection by the ruling BJD party is being closely watched as Odisha gears up for the crucial 2024 state assembly elections. The denial of tickets to some sitting MLAs and the fielding of new faces could impact the electoral dynamics in certain constituencies.

The voting for the 147-member Odisha Assembly will be held in four phases from May 13 to June 1, and the results will be announced on June 4. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed confidence that the BJD will form the government in Odisha once again in 2024. "The party has fielded the best candidates, who will work for the welfare of the people," Patnaik said in his video message announcing the latest list of candidates.
