Congress Accuses BJP of Delaying Census to End SC/ST Reservations

The Congress party has alleged that the BJP-led government has deliberately delayed the 2021 census in order to terminate reservations for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) in India. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh claimed that the Modi government failed to conduct the mandatory census, which is critical for determining caste-based reservations provided by the Constitution.

Ramesh accused the government of using the COVID-19 pandemic as an excuse to postpone the census, even as other countries managed to carry out their censuses during the same period. He alleged that the BJP's true motive is to destabilize the reservation system, which has been a key issue for the Congress party.

Why this matters: The delay in conducting the census has resulted in an estimated 10 crore people being denied benefits under the Food Security Act. The census is also essential for the proper implementation of caste-based reservations, which aim to uplift historically disadvantaged communities.

The Congress leader challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to point out where in the party's manifesto the phrase 'redistribution of wealth' has been mentioned. Ramesh accused Modi of spreading 'lies' to divert attention from pressing issues like unemployment and rising prices.

The Congress party has stated that it will fight the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on issues such as Nari Nyay, Yuva Nyay, Kisaan Nyay, Shramik Nyay, and Hissedari Nyay. It has also asserted that, contrary to BJP claims, it has no plans to introduce an inheritance tax.

Ramesh further questioned the government's reluctance to make public the entire dataset of the 2011 socio-economic caste census (SECC). "The Modi government did not conduct the mandatory 2021 census, which is critical for caste-based reservations provided by the Constitution. The government is avoiding the census because it wants to abolish reservations in the country," he stated.
