Ondo PDP to Elect Gubernatorial Candidate in Primary Election on Thursday

The Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is set to hold its governorship primary election on Thursday, April 25, 2024. A total of 627 delegates from the 18 local government areas of the state will gather at the International Culture and Events Centre in Akure to elect the party's gubernatorial candidate for the November 16 election.

Seven aspirants have been cleared by the Sen. Sam Egwu Screening Committee to participate in the primary. They include former Deputy Governor Agboola Ajayi, former Secretary-General of Afenifere Sola Ebiseni, former House of Representatives member Kolade Akinjo, and four others: Adeolu Akinwumi, Bamidele Akingboye, Bosun Arebuwa, and John Ola Mafo.

The primary election will be conducted by a 7-member committee headed by Bayelsa State Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo. Accreditation of delegates is scheduled to commence at 10:00 a.m. at the venue. The PDP has warned that only delegates and those with legitimate business at the event should be present, urging others to keep a reasonable distance from the arena.

Why this matters: The outcome of the PDP primary will determine who will face off against the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the November governorship election. The Ondo State governorship race is seen as a key battleground and a potential opportunity for the PDP to regain control of the state after losing to the APC in 2020.

The PDP primary comes on the heels of controversy surrounding the APC's own gubernatorial primary held earlier this week. Some APC leaders and aspirants have called for the nullification of the primary, alleging irregularities in the process. "The primary election was a charade and an abnormality," said a group of APC leaders under the aegis of the Movement of Truth, who urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene and cancel the results.

Deputy Governor Ewhrudjakpo, who chairs the PDP primary election committee, expressed confidence in the party's ability to conduct a free, fair and credible primary. "The PDP primary will be a demonstration of our superior organizational capacity and democratic credentials," he stated. The winner of the PDP gubernatorial ticket will be officially declared on Thursday evening after the conclusion of voting by the 627 delegates.
