Indian Congress Attacks PM Modi over JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna's Sex Abuse Allegations

The Indian National Congress has launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the sexual abuse allegations against Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)) MP Prajwal Revanna. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrote to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on May 4, condemning Revanna's actions and requesting extending support to the victims.

Why this matters: The allegations against Prajwal Revanna highlight the need for accountability among political leaders and the importance of addressing sexual violence in India. The incident also raises questions about the BJP's role in protecting its allies and the impact on the country's political landscape.

Gandhi expressed shock that PM Modi campaigned for Revanna despite being informed about the allegations by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in December 2023. "I am deeply shocked to learn that as far back as December 2023, our Home Minister Amit Shah was informed by G Devaraje Gowda about Prajwal Revanna's antecedents, especially his history of sexual violence and the presence of videos filmed by the perpetrator," Gandhi stated in his letter.

Revanna, the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, is facing allegations of sexually abusing several women after explicit video clips surfaced. The JD(S) leader has traveled to Germany on a diplomatic passport, without seeking political clearance, amidst the sexual abuse case. The Karnataka government has constituted a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the allegations.

Gandhi further accused Modi of consistently choosing silence in the face of violence against women, citing examples from Haryana and Manipur. "In my two decades in public life, I have never come across a senior public representative who has constantly chosen silence in the face of untold violence against women," he wrote.

The Congress leader urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to extend all possible support to the victims, stating, "I request you to kindly extend all possible support to the victims. They deserve our compassion and solidarity as they fight their battle for justice." Gandhi emphasized that the Congress party has a moral duty to fight for justice for the victims.

A request has been made to the Prime Minister to cancel Revanna's diplomatic passport and extradite him to India. Prajwal Revanna is the son of former prime minister and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda and elder brother of former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy. Theallegationsagainst the JD(S) leader have sent shockwaves through the political landscape, with the Congress party mounting pressure on the BJP-led government to take swift action and ensure justice for the victims.
