Kaduna Assembly Launches Probe into Ex-Governor El-Rufai's Financial Dealings

The Kaduna State House of Assembly has set up a 13-member committee to investigate the financial transactions, loans, grants, and project executions under the immediate past governor of the state, Nasir El-Rufai. The probe covers El-Rufai's tenure from 2015 to 2023.

The decision to launch the investigation comes after the current governor, Uba Sani, disclosed that his administration inherited a substantial debt burden from the previous government. Sani stated that the El-Rufai administration left the state with a debt of $587 million, ₦85 billion, and 115 contractual liabilities.

The ad-hoc committee, chaired by Lawal Aminu, has been tasked with examining the loans, grants, and project implementations during the period in question. They have also been mandated to invite notable personalities, including former speakers of the 8th and 9th Assembly, commissioners of finance, former managing directors of Kaduna markets, and commissioners of budget and planning, for questioning and investigation.

Governor Sani lamented that the inherited debt is eating deep into the state's federal allocation, with ₦7 billion out of the ₦10 billion allocation for March being deducted at source to service the debt. This has left the state with limited funds to cover expenses such as paying salaries.

Why this matters: The probe into the financial dealings of the previous administration in Kaduna State highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in governance. The investigation aims to uncover how the loans and grants received during El-Rufai's tenure were utilized and the impact of the inherited debt on the current administration's ability to deliver on its promises to the people of Kaduna.

The Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Yusuf Liman, assured that the matter will be properly investigated and that everyone involved will be given the opportunity to speak the truth. He emphasized that the Assembly does not want to be seen as a "rubber stamp" and will do the right thing.

When the committee begins its work, the people of Kaduna State await the outcome of the investigation, hoping for clarity on the state's financial situation and how it will affect their daily lives. The probe serves as a reminder of the need for responsible financial management in governance and the consequences of accumulating debt without proper planning and transparency.
