Ondo State Police Investigate Killing of Governor's Campaign Coordinator

The Ondo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the killing of Alaba Abe, one of the ward campaign coordinators for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, in Supare Akoko, Akoko South West Area of Ondo State, Nigeria.

Abe, popularly known as 'Excel', was reportedly killed by armed individuals on Saturday evening, April 27, 2024, just a week after the All Progressives Congress (APC) held its governorship primary in the state, in which Aiyedatiwa emerged victorious.

Abe served as the returning officer for the party's primary at Ward 10 in the council area. The police confirmed the incident and stated that the investigation is ongoing. "The Ondo State Police are investigating the killing of Alaba Abe, who was the campaign coordinator for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa," said Police Public Relations Officer, Funmilayo Odunlami.

The Lucky Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organisation Foot Soldiers Independent Council (LACO-FSIC) condemned the incident and urged the security agencies to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice. The group described Abe as a resourceful coordinator who was campaigning for the governor's election, and expressed condolences over his 'brutal killing'.

Why this matters: The killing of a prominent campaign coordinator in the lead-up to the Ondo State governorship election raises concerns about political violence and the security of those involved in the electoral process. It underscores the need for robust security measures to protect candidates, their supporters, and the integrity of the democratic process.

The Ondo APC Publicity Secretary, Mr Alex Kalejaiye, described the incident as unfortunate and sad, stating that the party cannot make any statement until it is properly briefed by the chairman of the local government of the deceased. Apprehension is growing in Ondo State following the killing, as the state authorities, including the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, also condemned the incident and expressed sympathy with Abe's family and associates.
