Priyanka Gandhi to Campaign for Congress in Zaheerabad Constituency

Priyanka Gandhi, AICC general secretary, is set to visit Kamareddy district headquarters on May 11 to support the Congress candidate, Suresh Kumar Shetkar, in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections for the Zaheerabad constituency in Telangana. The constituency is witnessing a high-stakes triangular battle between the Congress, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Why this matters: The outcome of this election will have significant implications for the political landscape of Telangana and may influence the state's relationship with the central government. Additionally, the contest will be closely watched as a bellwether for the performance of national parties in the region.

Instead of addressing a traditional public meeting, Priyanka Gandhi will participate in a road show in the town to garner support for Shetkar. The Congress leader's visit is expected to provide a significant boost to the party's campaign in the constituency. Shetkar, a soft-spoken leader from a political family, previously served as the Zaheerabad MP from 2009 to 2014 and undertook several developmental programs during his tenure.

The other key contestants in the race are Gali Anil Kumar from the BRS and B.B. Patil, a former BRS MP, who is now contesting on the BJP ticket. Patil, a twice-elected MP and businessman, hopes to capitalize on the Narendra Modi wave and the Ayodhya Ram temple issue. Despite being a native of Sirpur village, he struggles to speak Telugu fluently. During his previous terms, Patil ensured the widening of the Sangareddy-Nanded-Akola national highway and brought several central schemes to the constituency.

The Zaheerabad Lok Sabha constituency has a total of 14,45,246 voters and comprises seven Assembly constituencies: Zaheerabad (BRS), Andole (Congress), Narayankhed (Congress), Kamareddy (BJP), Yellareddy (Congress), Jukkal (Congress), and Banswada (BRS). In the 2014 elections, Patil won by a record margin of 1,44,631 votes, while in 2019, his victory margin narrowed to 6,229 votes.

The Lingayat community holds a decisive edge in the constituency, with both Patil and Shetkar belonging to this group. Meanwhile, Anil Kumar is eyeing the complete support of the Munnuru Kapu community, to which he belongs. Veerappa, a petty trader in Madnoor, stated,"People were vexed with Patil, even though he was contesting on the BJP ticket as he was never concerned about the welfare of the locals."

As the election campaign intensifies, top leaders from each party are expected to visit the constituency to sway voters in their favor. The Zaheerabad Lok Sabhaseatremains a crucial battleground, with the outcome potentially influencing the political landscape of Telangana in the 2024 general elections.
