Alappuzha District Panchayat Promotes Water Sports for Students

The Alappuzha district panchayat has taken a significant step to promote water sports among school students in the Aryad division on Vembanad Lake. In collaboration with the Aryad block panchayat and the Kayaking And Canoeing Association, Alappuzha, the district panchayat has purchased 20 canoes and kayaks to provide paddling training to students from government and private schools in the region.

The project was initiated after several students from the area showed keen interest in paddle sports. R. Riyas, the district panchayat member representing Aryad division, stated, "Students of government schools at Kalavoor and Mannancherry have been undergoing canoeing and kayaking training since May 2023. With the arrival of new paddle boats, they can better train and aim big." Two professional trainers have been appointed to provide training to the students.

The initiative has already yielded positive results, with a few students from government schools at Kalavoor and Mannancherry recently participating in a national paddle sports event. Additionally, a couple of students have been selected for a training program at the Sports Authority of India's Water Sports Centre at Punnamada in Alappuzha.

Alappuzha District Panchayat president K.G. Rajeshwari recently handed over the canoes and kayaks in a function held at Mannancherry. The event marked the official launch of the project, which aims to nurture young talent and promote water sports in the region.

Vembanad Lake, the longest lake in India, provides an ideal setting for water sports activities. The lake's serene waters and picturesque surroundings make it a popular destination for tourists and water sports enthusiasts. By introducing students to canoeing and kayaking, the Alappuzha district panchayat hopes to tap into the potential of the region's natural resources and create opportunities for young athletes.

The Alappuzha district panchayat's initiative to promote water sports among school students in the Aryad division has been well-received by the local community. With the purchase of 20 canoes and kayaks and the appointment of professional trainers, students from government and private schools in the region now have the opportunity to learn and excel in paddle sports. The recent participation of students in national events and their selection for advanced training programs highlight the potential impact of this project on nurturing young talent in the field of water sports.
