Boxing Champion Savannah Marshall Set for MMA Debut at PFL Europe 2

World champion boxer Savannah Marshall is poised to make her highly anticipated MMA debut on June 8 at PFL Europe 2: 2024 Regular Season. The event, taking place at the Utilita Arena in Marshall's hometown of Newcastle, England, will mark a significant milestone in her combat sports career as she aims to become a two-sport world champion.

Marshall's ultimate goal in transitioning to MMA is to secure a rematch with boxing rival Claressa Shields, but this time inside the MMA cage. "Yeah, that's the plan – everyone's asking about me going in the league and pushing on from there, winning belts but hopefully [I'll] fight Claressa in the cage. That's my goal, I want that rematch [with] cage rage," Marshall stated.

Shields, widely regarded as one of the greatest female boxers of all time, signed with the PFL in 2020 and made her MMA debut in 2021. The potential rematch between Marshall and Shields in the MMA realm has generated significant buzz among combat sports fans. "The thing that pushed me into this PFL deal was the fact that the boxing rematch just wasn't happening, and I was a bit devastated that it didn't happen straight after, it never materialized and that's just boxing politics," Marshall explained.

Marshall's focus remains squarely on avenging her sole professional boxing loss to Shields, regardless of the combat sport. "I'm not interested in fighting people who've got 15 years' experience in wrestling or a black belt in BJJ, I want that win back off Claressa whether it would be in the ring or in the cage," she emphasized.

"I think this all depends on what happens on June 8th, I could get in there and just absolutely get annihilated and my arm snapped then it would be the end of that. By June 9th I think I'd have a lot better of an idea of when that [rematch] could be possible," Marshall acknowledged.

PFL CEO Peter Murray expressed excitement about the prospect of a Marshall-Shields rematch in the MMA cage, stating, "The two are on a collision course for a rematch wearing 4oz gloves and settling the score in the PFL."

As a professional boxer, Marshall boasts an impressive 13-1 record, with her sole defeat coming at the hands of Shields. Meanwhile, Shields has already ventured into MMA, holding a 1-1 record in the sport. The PFL Europe 2 event in Newcastle will also feature Bantamweight and Women's Flyweight action. Tickets for the highly anticipated event are available from www.ticketmaster.co.uk, and the fights will be streamed live for fans around the world.
