The city of Charleston, West Virginia, is gearing up to host the prestigious USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships from May 14 to 19, 2024. This five-year commitment is expected to provide a significant boost to the local economy through sports tourism, as hundreds of cyclists and thousands of spectators descend upon the city for the event, with road closures announced.

Charleston prepares to welcomethe championships will feature a variety of races and events throughout the week, showcasing the skills and endurance of top professional cyclists from across the country. The Criterium race, scheduled for Thursday and Friday evenings, promises to be a highlight, with downtown Charleston's Slack Plaza serving as the hub of activity. Tim Brady, President and CEO of the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau, emphasizes the excitement, stating,"Thursday and Friday evenings is the Criterium race in downtown Charleston. Slack Plaza will be the place to be for that."

Local businesses are eagerly preparing for the influx of visitors, with restaurants like Black Sheep Burritos and Brews offering prime viewing spots and a vibrant atmosphere. Kevin Madison, General Manager for Black Sheep Burritos and Brews, highlights theunique experience,"We've got the amazing corner turn here at Quarrier and Summers. We've got two patios, people can enjoy drinks and food and watch the races, but you've also got the vibe of the expo and live entertainment and things at city center and Slack Plaza."

In addition to the races, the championships will feature various events and activities for families and spectators to enjoy. Bridge Road is expected to be a popular spot, with KRT buses providing shuttles to South Hills throughout the weekend. On Sunday, Bridge Road shops will offer food, games, and music, creating a festive atmosphere. The Haddad Riverfront Park will serve as the location for the start and finish lines, adding to theexcitement.

The championships also present an opportunity for community engagement and fundraising. The Bob Burdette Center will host the "Charley West BBQ Fest" on Saturday, a fundraiser featuring delicious BBQ dishes. Proceeds from the event will go towards supporting the center's after-school program. Dianna Graves, Executive Director of Bob Burdette Center, expresses her enthusiasm, "Families that maybe wouldn't be able to afford it on their own we bring in certified tutors/teachers to come in and help them with their math and their reading skills. So, we're very excited the cycling event is going to be here and hopefully bring in a lot of extra people who might like BBQ."
