Penn State wrestling has received a major boost with the announcement that senior heavyweight Greg Kerkvliet will return for the 2024-2025 season to defend his national title. Kerkvliet made the announcement on his Instagram account, simply stating, "Coming back!"

Kerkvliet is coming off an undefeated season marked by sheer dominance. Only six of his matches did not earn bonus points, and just one had a victory margin of fewer than five points. He capped off his stellar campaign by defeating Michigan's Lucas Davison in a 13-4 major decision to claim his first individual national championship.

The return of Kerkvliet is a huge addition to an already stacked Penn State lineup. He will join fellow defending national champion Carter Starocci, who is chasing an unprecedented fifth individual title. The Nittany Lions also return 157-pound national champ Levi Haines and 165-pound finalistMitchell Mesenbrink.

With Kerkvliet back in the fold, Penn State is projected to field the nation's top team for the 2024-2025 season. The Nittany Lions return starters at every weight class except 184 pounds, where Bernie Truax Jr. departs, and 197 pounds with the graduation of Aaron Brooks. The team has the potential to feature a lineup with up to eight All-Americans and three individual national champions.

Penn State is coming off a historic performance at the 2024 NCAA Wrestling Championships, where they shattered the all-time team scoring record with 172.5 points. Under the guidance of head coach Cael Sanderson, the Nittany Lions crowned four individual national champions and will be seeking their 12th team title in Sanderson's tenure next season.

The 2024-2025 season is shaping up to be another special one for Penn State wrestling. With Greg Kerkvliet and Carter Starocci leading a powerhouse lineup, the Nittany Lions have their sights set on continued dominance and cementing their status as one of the greatest dynasties in college sports history.
