Tadej Pogacar of UAE Team Emirates has solidified his grip on the Maglia Rosa with a commanding victory in the Stage 7 individual time trial at the Giro d'Italia. The Slovenian cyclist completed the 40.6 km course from Foligno to Perugia in an impressive 51:44, extending his overall lead.

Magnus Sheffield, also of Ineos Grenadiers, took third place, 49 seconds behind Pogacar. The UAE Team Emirates leader now holds a 2:36 advantage over Daniel Martinez of Bora-Hansgrohe in the general classification.

"After the World Championships last year, today was my first race on the TT bike again," Pogacar said. "It was a lot of preparation for this and a lot of ups and downs since last year in the time trial, so I'm super happy that today I felt good." The two-time Tour de France winner paced himself on the flat section before powering up the final climb to Perugia.

Geraint Thomas of Ineos Grenadiers, one of Pogacar's main rivals, struggled on the course, losing 2:03 to the race leader. The Welshman slipped to third overall, 2:46 behind Pogacar. "It is what it is. It's just one of those days," Thomas said. "I tried to ride within myself and when it was time to go, I felt okay but just lacked it a bit."

With his substantialleadand strong form, Pogacar looks poised to achieve that historic feat as the race heads into the decisive mountain stages.
