CATL Unveils LFP Battery with Over 1,000 km Range on Single Charge

CATL, a leading Chinese electric vehicle (EV) battery maker, has unveiled a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery with a driving range of over 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) on a single charge. The Shenxing Plus battery is the world's first LFP battery to achieve such an impressive range, according to CATL's Chief Technology Officer Gao Huan.

LFP batteries are more environmentally friendly than the more commonly used lithium-ion batteries in EVs. Currently, four car models use CATL's current-generation Shenxing battery with a 700 km range, and over 50 more models will be equipped with it by the end of this year.

CATL, the world's largest EV battery maker, saw its profit swing to growth in the first quarter of 2024 after posting its first quarterly profit fall since 2022 amid slowing demand and intensified competition. Chinese battery makers, including CATL, have grown faster than their rivals, accounting for more than two-thirds of global EV battery capacity last year.

The Shenxing Plus battery features several technological breakthroughs, including a granular gradation cathode, a 3D honeycomb-shaped anode, and a single-piece casing, which have enabled it to reach an energy density of 205 Wh/kg. Additionally, the battery can charge at a superfast rate, delivering a 600-km range in just 10 minutes of charging.

Why this matters: The development of the Shenxing Plus battery represents a significant milestone in the EV industry, addressing key concerns about range and charging infrastructure that have hindered wider adoption of electric vehicles. CATL's breakthrough could accelerate the transition to EVs and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

CATL has also initiated the construction of the Shenxing Superfast Charging Network to support the new battery technology and provide a comprehensive ecosystem for electric vehicle owners. "CATL is committed to providing solutions and services for new energy applications worldwide," said Gao Huan. The company is also in discussions to establish R&D centers in Hong Kong to support its technology exports.
