India has achieved a significant milestone in enhancing its anti-submarine warfare capabilities with the successful flight test of the Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) system. The test, conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on May 1, 2024, demonstrated the full range capability of the missile, validating several state-of-the-art mechanisms.

The missile uses a two-stage solid propulsion system, electromechanical actuators, precision inertial navigation, and a data link for mid-course updates and terminal homing of the torpedo.

The test, conducted at 8:30 AM from the launching complex 4 of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha, showcased the system's ability to launch torpedoes at significant distances from targets, enabling a rapid and safe response to potential threats. The SMART system can be launched from a surface ship or a mobile terrestrial platform using a BEML-Tatra 8×8 tractor-erector launcher.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the successful test, stating, "The development of the system will further enhance the strength of our Navy." Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of the DRDO, lauded the synergistic efforts of the entire SMART team and urged them to continue on the path of excellence.

The SMART system is aimed at countering the increasing deployment of submarines by the Chinese navy in the Indian Ocean region and enhancing India's self-reliance in defense capabilities.
