Prof Anu Muhammad to Undergo Combined Surgery Following PM's Instructions

Activist-economist Prof Anu Muhammad will undergo a combined surgery at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, Bangladesh, according to Health Minister Dr Samanta Lal Sen. The decision was made on April 23 following instructions from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to ensure the "highest possible treatment" for Prof Muhammad.

Prof Muhammad suffered serious leg injuries, including severed toes on his left foot, in a train accident on Sunday. He was initially admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later shifted to the burn institute on the minister's advice. "After reviewing the pictures sent by the doctors, I decided that Prof Anu Muhammad needs a combined operation for his injuries," stated Dr Sen.

The combined surgery will include both orthopedic and plastic surgery procedures, which the minister said is the best available treatment at the institute. A medical board will be formed to oversee Prof Muhammad's treatment and provide the necessary care to help him recover and return to his work.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina personally called the health minister to inquire about Prof Muhammad's condition and instructed him to take all necessary measures. "The Prime Minister inquired about Prof Anu Muhammad's condition and instructed us to take all necessary measures," said Dr Sen. "We want Prof Anu Muhammad to recover and return to his workplace."

Why this matters: Prof Anu Muhammad is a prominent activist-economist and member of the National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports in Bangladesh. His contributions to the country's economic and social issues make his well-being a matter of national concern.

The Health Minister also discussed measures to address the adverse situation due to the intense heat wave, including shifting most classes online and providing air-conditioned rooms for clinical classes. Prof Muhammad, a retired professor of economics at Jahangirnagar University, was returning to Dhaka from Dinajpur, where he had attended a memorial meeting, when the accident occurred at Khilgaon in the capital.
