Asantehene Meets Families of Children Saved by Hole-in-Heart Surgeries

During his silver jubilee celebrations in Kumasi, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II met with families of 25 children who underwent successful hole-in-heart surgeries at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. The life-saving operations were sponsored by the Shen Yuet and Shen Yang Children Heart Foundation, in collaboration with Herbert Mensah's May 9 Foundation.

Why this matters: This initiative highlights the importance of international collaboration and philanthropy in addressing critical healthcare needs in developing countries. It also underscores the potential for private foundations to make a significant impact on public health outcomes, particularly in areas where government resources may be limited.

The meeting coincided with the 23rd anniversary of the Accra Sports Stadium Disaster on May 11, 2024. Herbert Mensah, former Chairman of Kumasi Asante Kotoko and founder of the May 9 Foundation, led a walk to commemorate the tragic event that claimed 126 lives in 2001. Mensah, who now serves as Secretary of the Shen Yang and Shen Yuet Children's Heart Foundation, facilitated the partnership to provide support for families of children with hole-in-heart disease.

"In the last year, we have teamed up with the Shen Yang Children's Heart Foundation... and whose founder, YC Shen, an extraordinary man from China, has invested so much in the heart surgeries of more than 25 children at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital... and in the process, we have saved the lives of many children, although some could not make it," Mensah stated during the meeting with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The surgeries, guided by Dr. Kow Entsua Mensah of the National Cardiothoracic Centre in Accra, cost between $6,000 and $14,000 each. The entire cost was covered by the Shen Yang & Shen Yuet Children's Heart Foundation, founded by Chinese business mogul Y.C. Shen. Mensah revealed that the foundation aims to perform 20 to 30 surgeries every year for the next decade.

"So far, successful surgeries have been done for about over 25 children with hole-in-heart disease at Korle Bu. A few children could not make it through the surgeries due to delayed intervention with each of the surgeries costing between $6000-$14000," Mensah explained. "The entire cost is covered by the Shen Yang & Shen Yuet Children's Heart Foundation which was started by one of my business associates Mr. Y.C Shen. As secretary of this children's heart foundation, I can tell you that we intend to do between 20 and 30 surgeries every year for the next 10 years. "

The Asantehene, who is the life patron of Asante Kotoko, praised Herbert Mensah and the Shen Yuet and Shen Yang Children's Heart Foundation for their philanthropic intervention. He encouraged them to continue their efforts in helping more children and their families overcome the challenges posed by hole-in-heart disease. The meeting served as a heartwarming highlight during Otumfuo Osei Tutu II's silver jubilee celebrations, showcasing the positive impact of international collaboration and compassion in saving young lives.
