Ghana Receives First Batch of Modern Trains as Part of Railway Infrastructure Boost

Ghana has made substantial progress in its journey towards enhanced railway connectivity and economic development with the arrival of the first batch of 12 state-of-the-art bullet trains from Poland. The NPP Germany branch has commended the Akufo-Addo administration for the investments being made in the railway sector, particularly the completion of the 97km Tema-Mpakadan Standard Gauge Railway Line.

The new trains are part of a £1 billion fleet of Class 730 trains being introduced on the Cross City Line in Birmingham, UK by West Midlands Railway (WMR). The modern trains feature spacious interiors, walkthrough carriages, accessible toilets, Wi-Fi connectivity, and power points at every seat, enhancing the travel experience for millions of passengers. The rollout of the new fleet is scheduled throughout the spring and summer, with the full transition expected to be completed by autumn.

The arrival of the first Pesa diesel multiple-unit (DMU) for the Tema-Mpakadan railway line is a proud moment for the VAOB financing and infrastructure management group, which is working with the Ghanaian Ministry of Railway Development to advance critical infrastructure projects in the country and across Africa. The two-car DMU, part of Pesa's Link family, was delivered to the port of Tema in early April 2024 after being transported from the manufacturer's assembly plant in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

The Tema-Mpakadan route, built with financial support from Exim Bank, is intended as the first stage of a 1,000 km link that will eventually reach Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso. The DMUs, capable of reaching speeds up to 120 km/h, will be maintained by Pesa for five years. The second unit is expected to be shipped in May, and there is a possibility of an additional order for 10 more DMUs.

The NPP Germany branch highlights the numerous benefits of bullet trains, including efficient transportation, reduced traffic congestion, environmental sustainability, boost to tourism, job creation, economic development, enhanced productivity, improved safety, and technological advancements. The group urges Ghanaians to continue supporting the NPP government to retain power and ensure the further development of the railway sector.

Why this matters:The arrival of modern trains and the completion of the Tema-Mpakadan Standard Gauge Railway Line signify a historic moment in Ghana's path towards enhanced connectivity and economic prosperity. This investment in railway infrastructure not only facilitates the movement of goods and people along the Eastern Corridor but also lays the foundation for broader regional connectivity with the Ghana-Burkina Faso interconnectivity project.

The NPP Germany branch emphasizes that these advancements in the railway sector will bring numerous benefits to Ghana, including efficient transportation, reduced traffic congestion, environmental sustainability, boost to tourism, job creation, economic development, enhanced productivity, improved safety, and technological advancements. As stated by the group, "The completion of the Tema-Mpakadan Standard Gauge Railway Line and the arrival of these modern trains are seen as a historic moment that signifies a stride forward in Ghana's journey towards enhanced connectivity and economic prosperity."
