Dimple Yadav Declares Over Rs 15.5 Crore Assets in Nomination for Mainpuri Lok Sabha Seat

Dimple Yadav, the Samajwadi Party (SP) leader and sitting MP from Mainpuri, filed her nomination papers for the Lok Sabha seat on Tuesday. She declared movable and immovable assets worth over Rs 15.5 crore, a marginal increase from the Rs 14 crore she had declared in 2022 when contesting the parliamentary bypoll.

According to the affidavit, Dimple declared immovable assets worth more than Rs 10.44 crore and movable assets worth over Rs 5.10 crore. Her husband, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, has movable and immovable assets worth more than Rs 9.12 crore and Rs 17.22 crore respectively, taking their total combined immovable assets to over Rs 27.66 crore.

Dimple's assets include gold ornaments measuring 2.77 kg, a 203 gm pearl, and a 127.75 carat diamond worth Rs 59.77 lakh . She also declared a computer worth Rs 1.25 lakh. Akhilesh Yadav possesses a mobile worth about Rs 76,000, exercise equipment worth Rs 5.34 lakh, and crockery worth around Rs 1.6 lakh.

While Akhilesh Yadav has a liability of Rs 25.40 lakh, Dimple has a liability of Rs 74.44 lakh. Dimple's income has marginally decreased from Rs 78.66 lakh in 2021-22 to Rs 76.5 lakh in 2022-23.

Dimple was accompanied by her husband and SP president Akhilesh Yadav, as well as party national general secretaries Ram Gopal Yadav and Shivpal Yadav, while filing her nomination . In a show of unity, Shivpal Yadav accompanied Dimple and Akhilesh in the same car from Safai to Mainpuri, marking the end of a five-year-long bitter feud within the Yadav family.

Akhilesh claimed that the BSP changed its candidate for the seat after 'getting a phone call from the BJP' and promised to declare the party's pick for Kannauj soon. He also criticized the BJP for making false promises and claimed that the saffron party would lose all 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh.

Why this matters: The Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat is a key constituency in Uttar Pradesh and a Samajwadi Party stronghold, previously represented by Dimple's father-in-law, Mulayam Singh Yadav. The upcoming election will test the SP's hold on the seat and the unity of the Yadav family, which has seen internal feuds in recent years.

Dimple Yadav is pitted against BJP candidate Jaiveer Singh and BSP's Shiv Prasad Yadav in the upcoming election. She won the Mainpuri seat in the 2022 Lok Sabha bypoll after it was vacated following the death of SP patriarch and her father-in-law, Mulayam Singh Yadav. The election is scheduled to be held on May 7, 2024, as part of the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh.
