DRDO Develops India's Lightest Bulletproof Jacket for Highest Threat Protection

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has reached a significant milestone by developing India's lightest bulletproof jacket, capable of providing protection against the highest threat level. The jacket, developed by DRDO's Defence Materials and Stores Research and Development Establishment (DMSRDE) in Kanpur, has been successfully tested and certified to withstand multiple hits from 7.62x54 R API ammunition, which corresponds to Level 6 of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) 17051.

The innovative design of the jacket incorporates novel materials and processes, resulting in an incredibly lightweight and ergonomic solution. The front Hard Armour Panel (HAP) of the jacket consists of a monolithic ceramic plate with a polymer backing, ensuring maximum protection while enhancing wearability and comfort during operations. The areal density of the In-conjunction with (ICW) HAP is less than 40 kg/m2, and the standalone HAP is less than 43 kg/m2, making it the lightest bulletproof jacket in the country capable of protecting against the highest threat level.

Why this matters: The development of this lightweight and high-protection bulletproof jacket is a significant achievement for India's defense capabilities. It not only enhances the safety and mobility of military personnel but also showcases India's advancements in defense technology on a global scale.

The jacket underwent rigorous testing at the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) in Chandigarh, where it met all the criteria set by BIS 17051-2018 standards. The front HAP demonstrated its ability to withstand multiple hits from 7.62 x 54 R API sniper rounds in both ICW and standalone designs, proving its reliability and effectiveness in providing the highest level of protection.

DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat congratulated the DMSRDE team for their successful development of this innovative bulletproof jacket. "The lightweight bulletproof jacket developed by DMSRDE is a testament to DRDO's commitment to providing advanced technology and equipment to our armed forces," he said. "This achievement not only meets the urgent needs of our military personnel but also positions India as a leader in the development of sophisticated defense solutions."
