InterGlobe Enterprises and Archer Aviation to Launch Electric Air Taxi Service in India by 2026

InterGlobe Enterprises, the parent company of IndiGo Airlines, has announced a joint venture with US-based Archer Aviation to launch an all-electric air taxi service in India by 2026. The service will initially connect Connaught Place in New Delhi to Gurugram in Haryana, reducing travel duration from 90 minutes by road to just 7 minutes. The companies plan to expand the service to Mumbai and Bengaluru in the first phase.

Archer Aviation will supply 200 electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for the service, each capable of carrying four passengers and a pilot. The cost per trip is expected to be between Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 3,000. "The joint venture between InterGlobe and Archer Aviation will focus on establishing the air taxi service in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru initially, with plans to potentially manufacture the planes in India in the future," said a spokesperson for InterGlobe Enterprises.

The certification process for Archer Aviation's five-seater 'Midnight' eVTOL aircraft is at an advanced stage with the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Once certified, the company will seek approval from India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Archer Aviation is also working on setting up the required infrastructure and partnerships for the service, including vertiports or launchpads.

Why this matters: The launch of electric air taxi services in India could transform urban transportation and reduce traffic congestion in major cities. It also represents a significant step towards sustainable mobility solutions and reducing the environmental impact of transportation.

The global advanced aerial mobility market is projected to reach $45 billion by 2030, and InterGlobe Enterprises' venture will compete with other Indian startups like The ePlane Company and Bumble Bee Flights in the emerging electric air taxi market. The Midnight eVTOL aircraft can be fully charged in 30-40 minutes, with one minute of charge translating to one minute of flight. "The five-seater Midnight aircraft will be able to get fully charged in 30-40 minutes, with one minute of charge translating to one minute of flight," explained an Archer Aviation representative.
