JD(S) Leader HD Revanna Granted Conditional Bail in Kidnapping Case

HD Revanna, a senior Janata Dal (Secular) leader and former minister, has been granted conditional bail by a Special Court for Elected Representatives in connection with a kidnapping case. Revanna was arrested on May 4 by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for his alleged involvement in the abduction of a woman linked to sexual abuse allegations against his son, Prajwal Revanna.

Why this matters: This case highlights the misuse of power and influence by political leaders, which can have far-reaching consequences for the justice system and the rule of law. The investigation and outcome of this case will be closely watched, as it may set a precedent for how political leaders are held accountable for their actions.

The bail was granted on Monday, with several conditions imposed on Revanna. He was directed to execute a personal bond of Rs 5 lakh with two sureties, not to threaten or tamper with prosecution witnesses or the complainant and victim, and to appear before the Investigating Officer (IO) whenever summoned for investigation. Revanna was also ordered to surrender his passport to the court and not leave the state without written permission.

During the bail hearing, Revanna's counsel, C.V. Nagesh, argued that there was a political conspiracy behind his client's arrest. Nagesh claimed that the victim had recently stated in a video that she had not been abducted by Revanna or his family. "SIT has not furnished a single piece of evidence against my client to establish that he abducted the victim. There is no demand for money or valuables or any sort of force against the victim. The Section 364A (kidnapping for ransom) cannot be invoked in this case," Nagesh contended.

However, the SIT advocates, Jaina Kothari and Ashok Naik, countered this argument, stating that the victim had given a statement against Revanna and that the SIT had recorded statements under CrPC sections 161 and 164. They further argued that the victim and her family had been threatened by the accused and required police protection.

The case was registered at the KR Nagara police station in Mysuru on May 2 following a complaint by the 20-year-old son of the elderly victim. The woman was allegedly abducted to prevent her from testifying against Prajwal Revanna, who is facing charges of sexually abusing multiple women. Revanna's confidant, Sathish Babanna, was also arrested in connection with the case.

HD Revanna, a 66-year-old former minister and JD(S) MLA, was arrested from his father's residence in Bengaluru on May 4. The SIT rescued the woman from a farmhouse in Mysuru's Hunsur taluk the same day. Revanna spent three days in police custody before being remanded to judicial custody until May 14. The court's decision to grant him conditional bail has come as a relief to the senior politician, even as the investigation into the case continues.
