Maura Derrane Shares Heartbreaking Story of Father's Cancer Battle

RTÉ's Today Show presenter Maura Derrane breaks down in tears as she recounted the devastating story of her father Mattie's battle with esophageal cancer on the show Keys To My Life. Mattie was diagnosed with the disease in his 40s, back in the mid-1970s, a diagnosis that would change his life and the lives of his family forever.

Maura vividly remembers the day her father received the diagnosis. "I remember the day it happened very well. He was bent over and really roaring with pain. It came on him very suddenly," she recalled. Mattie underwent extensive surgery, which included the removal of half his stomach, his spleen, and most of his esophagus.

The surgery and cancer diagnosis took a significant toll on Mattie's life. "Half his stomach was removed; his spleen was removed. Most of his esophagus was removed, so his life changed that day, and our lives changed forever, because after that he wasn't the same person," Maura shared. Mattie suffered from depression and was unable to work at the same pace following his diagnosis and treatment.

Despite the challenges, Mattie lived for nearly three more decades after his initial diagnosis. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on New Year's Eve 2004 at the age of 79 due to a heart attack. Maura expressed a sense of relief that her father did not suffer a prolonged illness at the end of his life, saying, "I was happy that Dad went the way he went. I was, because how much can anyone suffer? I would have hated if dad had a long prolonged illness at the end, because he suffered a lot in his life. That brings me great peace, and all of us great peace."

The emotional episode of Keys To My Life, which airs Sundays at 7.30pm on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player, is dedicated to Maura's younger sister Rita, who passed away from cancer last year. Maura also expressed sadness that her son Cal never had the chance to meet his grandfather Mattie.

Maura Derrane's heartfelt story sheds light on the profound impact cancer can have on individuals and their families. Mattie Derrane's nearly 30-year battle with the disease following his diagnosis in the 1970s is a testament to his strength and resilience. While his passing in 2004 brought a sense of peace, his memory and the lessons learned from his experience continue to resonate with Maura and her family.
