Tourists Killed in Tragic Accident on Namibian Road, Police Investigating

A group of tourists was involved in a fatal accident on the C14 road outside Walvis Bay, Erongo, Namibia on April 24, 2024. The Erongo police spokesperson, Inspector Ileni Shapumba, reported that the police had dispatched a team of emergency officials, including investigators, to the scene. However, due to poor reception in the area, there was no immediate communication from the team on the ground.

Shapumba confirmed that there was a report of a fatality, although the details were still unclear. The police have requested patience from the public and promised to provide more information as it becomes available. The accident involved about 40 tourists in four vehicles, including buses.

According to Chief Inspector Ileni Shapumb, the head of the community affairs division of the Namibian Police in the Erongo Region, it is alleged that one of the buses suffered a mechanical failure on its brakes as it was about to enter the Kuiseb River Canyon, causing it to smash into an oncoming bus also transporting tourists. The bus without brakes then fell over on its side and crashed into a smaller bus and a bakkie that were parked by the road to allow tourists to take pictures of the canyon. At least one tourist was reported to have passed away at the scene.

Emergency services from Swakopmund and Walvis Bay responded to the incident, and all available ambulances were dispatched to the scene to assist the injured tourists and transport the seriously injured to hospitals. A detailed report of the incident will be made available at a later stage.

Why this matters: This tragic accident highlights the importance of road safety and the need for regular vehicle maintenance, especially for tour operators transporting large groups. The incident also underscores the challenges faced by emergency responders in remote areas with limited communication infrastructure.

Inspector Shapumba stated, "We have dispatched a team of emergency officials, including investigators, to the scene. However, due to poor reception in the area, we have not received any communication from the members on the ground yet." The police have requested patience from the public as they work to gather more information about the accident and provide updates on the situation.
