Delta Air Lines Resumes Daily New York-Lagos Flights, Boosts Service to Nigeria

Delta Air Lines announced that it will resume daily flights from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport to Lagos, Nigeria starting on December 1, 2024. The route, which was previously cut in 2022, will complement Delta's existing daily service from Atlanta to Lagos, increasing the airline's total weekly flights to Nigeria to 14 during the peak winter season.

The New York-Lagos flights will be operated using Airbus A330-200 aircraft, offering customers a choice of four cabin classes: Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort, and Main Cabin. From January 16, 2025, the frequency of the New York-Lagos route will be reduced to three times per week.

In addition to the resumed Lagos service, Delta is making other enhancements to its African routes. The airline will upgrade its aircraft serving the New York-Accra, Ghana route to the Airbus A330-900neo, resulting in a capacity increase of around 30% and nearly 1,000 more seats per week. For flights from Atlanta to South Africa, Delta will introduce the higher-premium Airbus A350-900, providing an additional 8 Delta One Suite seats.

Why this matters: Delta's resumption of the New York-Lagos route and increased service to Nigeria reflects the growing demand for travel between the United States and Africa. As the largest U.S. carrier to Africa, Delta's commitment to meeting the changing needs of its customers and providing premium service options highlights the significance of this market.

Joe Esposito, Delta's Senior Vice President of Network Planning, stated that these enhancements reflect the airline's dedication to meeting the changing needs of its customers and expanding their options to experience the premium service and elevated hospitality they expect from Delta. With over half a million customers carried annually between the U.S. and Africa on more than 34 weekly flights, Delta continues to solidify its position as a leading carrier in this market.
